Terms of Membership – Crafts Council Membership
Thank you for becoming a member and becoming a part of the Crafts Council community. This page outlines the terms of your membership and to help you understand what you can expect from us, and what we kindly ask of you in return.
We encourage you to read these terms alongside our website terms and conditions as together they form the basis of your agreement with us.
By joining and paying your membership fee, you enter into a legally binding agreement with the Crafts Council under these terms.
Our Work
Crafts Council aims to inspire making, empower learning and nurture craft businesses. We believe craft skills and knowledge enrich and uplift us as individuals, and, in doing so, will change our world for the better.
Our activities are supported by a set of principles that underpin the way in which we work:
- We connect with the craft community to identify priorities and gaps
- We invest in research and development to test new ideas, evaluate and reflect
- We share our assets with the sector – our staff, our collection, our gallery, our archive, insight, communications channels and reach
- We scale in partnership to deliver projects of real impact
- We build dynamic relationships beyond the craft world to amplify crafts’ visibility
- Definitions
1.1 In these terms and conditions, the following words have the following meanings:
‘Member’ means you and/or any other member of the Crafts Council Membership Scheme (depending on the context in which it is used). Please note that these terms and conditions apply to all members.
‘Membership Fee’ means the money you have paid to Crafts Council to become a member.
‘Membership Period’ means the date from which Crafts Council receives your Membership Fee to the date on which your Membership expires. This will usually be 12 months from the date that we receive your Membership Fee if you pay annually or every month from the date we receive your Membership Fee if you pay monthly. The term of your Membership Period is set out on your account profile page.
‘Crafts Council’ means the national charity for craft in the UK, charity registration number 280956.
- Your details
2.1 During your time as a Member we will collect information about you to personalise your experience of Membership. Additional personal data may be collected to help Crafts Council understand its demographic reach. For information on what type of information we collect, please see our Privacy Policy- https://www.craftscouncil.org.uk/privacy-policy. We collect information about you in a variety of ways including, but not limited to:
2.1.1 when you join as a Member;
2.1.2 when you make bookings for Crafts Council events;
2.1.3 when you create online user accounts;
2.1.4 when you respond to Crafts Council emails.
2.2 All information that you provide to Crafts Council will be processed and held in accordance with the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018 and all other applicable UK and EU law.
2.3 You agree that personal details provided to Crafts Council may be used for administrative purposes to fulfil your membership rights and provide membership services to you. We are committed to protecting your privacy. Any personal information you provide when joining as a member will be stored securely and used only for administering your membership and keeping you informed about relevant news, events, and opportunities. We will never sell or share your details with third parties for marketing purposes, and will only disclose information if required to do so by law. 2.4 As part of your membership, we’ll keep you updated about Crafts Council news, events, and opportunities. We may also share information about carefully selected opportunities, events, or initiatives from partner organisations where we believe these may be of genuine interest to our members. Your personal details are never shared with these organisations; all communications will come directly from us.
2.5 You are responsible for informing us of changes to your personal details.
2.6 Please do not share your individual passwords for access to our on-line services with anyone else.
2.7 Crafts Council is committed to equal opportunities and we strive to reach and impact all communities with our work. We ask our audiences non-mandatory questions about their age, ethnicity, gender and sexual identity in order to understand how well we are doing at reaching under-represented groups. The information we collect will be used for numerical insights only, and processed in a manner that ensures the highest level of security and confidentiality for your personal data.
2.8 Subject to clause 2.3 Crafts Council will never sell, rent or exchange your details with any other organisation outside of the Crafts Council Group.
2.9 You may opt-out of communications from Crafts Council at any time, although they form part of your Membership benefits and doing so limits our ability to delivery your membership. We may still need to contact you individually about important information relating to your membership, for example, payment issues, changes to your account, or matters affecting your membership status. If you wish to opt-out of communications from any of Crafts Council or any other member of the Crafts Council Group by any of the above channels please inform us in emailing [email protected]. You can also unsubscribe from Crafts Council emails via the unsubscribe link at the bottom of all emails sent to you by Crafts Council. - Subscription fees and payment
3.1 All Members will pay an annual or monthly Membership fee. Crafts Council reserves the right in its absolute discretion to change the Membership fee each year. Any change will take effect at your next renewal. We will give you at least 30 days notice before any change takes effect, and you will have the option to cancel your membership if you do not wish to continue at the new rate.
3.2 Your Membership is valid immediately from the day that your Membership fee is received by Crafts Council in cleared funds and will usually be valid for 12 months unless, you have purchased a monthly Membership Period. If you do not renew your Membership it will expire automatically at the end of the Membership Period unless it is renewed in accordance with clauses 3.4 or 3.5 below.
3.3 Upon expiry of your Membership you will no longer be a Member and you will no longer be entitled to receive any Membership benefits.
3.4 Renewal by card payment: When each Membership Period comes to an end, Crafts Council will send you a renewal reminder. If you do not wish to renew your Membership you must inform Crafts Council at the earliest opportunity and preferably at least 10 days before the end of your Membership Period.
3.5 If you wish you cancel your membership you can do this via your account or by emailing [email protected]
3.6 Crafts Council reserves the right to end your membership if, in our reasonable view, your behaviour causes harm, distress, or disruption to others. This includes fellow members, visitors, staff, trustees, patrons, donors, or supporters of the Crafts Council. Membership may also be withdrawn if these terms and conditions are breached.
3.7 Subject to any statutory right to cancel, your Membership Fee is non-refundable once payment has been received by Crafts Council.
3.8 Membership rights are not transferrable.
3.9 Membership rights shall cease on a Member’s death or an individual ceasing to be a Member.

4.2 As a member you are entitled to benefits depending on your tier. Crafts Council may refresh or update the membership benefits to ensure they remain relevant and valuable. While the exact benefits may change, we will always aim to provide members with a rewarding experience and will inform you of any significant updates.

5.1 Unless Crafts Council states otherwise, copyright and all other rights in all publications and materials supplied to you by Crafts Council are owned by Crafts Council. Members may not reproduce, transmit, distribute, sell or commercially exploit these materials without the prior written consent of Crafts Council or to the extent expressly permitted by law.
- Liability
6.1 Subject to clause 6.3, and to the extent possible by law, Crafts Council excludes all liability to members or to any other third party for any loss of profit, or any special, incidental or consequential damages (however arising, including negligence) arising out of, or in connection with services, benefits and/or products supplied by Crafts Council.
6.2 Subject to clause 6.3, the liability of Crafts Council to you is limited to the amount of your membership fee.
6.3 Nothing in these terms and conditions excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by Crafts Council’s negligence or for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation.
Crafts Council Directory Member Services
As part of Crafts Council Membership you can apply to be accepted on the Directory. A curated platform to showcase your craft to buyers, industry and sector. Inclusion is based on an approved criteria and so is not guaranteed.
- Definitions
8.1 In these terms and conditions, the following words have the following meanings:
‘Crafts Council Directory’ is used to refer to our Crafts Councils’ online platform of makers.
8.2 ‘Directory Member Services’ refers to the services provided by the Crafts Council to members who hold a Directory profile. These services relate to the Crafts Council Directory and are described both below and on our website.
8.3 ‘Directory profile’ is the term used to cover an individual makers page and related portal.
8.4 ‘Public Directory profile’ is the term used to describe what can be accessed by Crafts Council audiences.
9 Your details
9.1 All private information will be kept in accordance with point ‘2. Your details’ .
9.2 Your submission of personal information through the Site is governed by our Privacy Policy.
10 Professional contact details
10.1 For professional purposes certain information such as business name, email, website and social handles can be published as part of your Public Directory profile, this is your responsibility for the information that is chosen to be displayed Public Directory profile.
10.2 Your postcode is used to give an approximate location and is not published on our website.
11 Your Directory Details
Crafts Council uses email as a method of communicating about Directory Member Services. Please see our Privacy Policy for further information relating to our use of your personal data and any other information that you provide.
11.1 Crafts Council will need to contact you from time to time with information relating to Directory member services and other Crafts Council activity. See 2. ‘Your Details’
11.2 It is your responsibility to ensure that we have current and valid contact information and that you set up your spam filter / junk mail folder correctly to ensure that emails from Crafts Council (including automated emails) can be received.
11.3 Information emailed to you may contain confidential information about you or an opportunity and it is your responsibility to your email address secure and ensure that the relevant logins are not known by anyone else.
11.4 We may also on occasion contact you with enquiries and opportunities from third parties, if a third party wants to be reach out to you directly we will not provide any contact details unless they are published on your public directory profile and/or website on a business capacity, if this is not the case we will request permission before sharing.
12 Intellectual Property
12.1 Restrictions and responsibilities:
12.1.1 The intellectual property rights in, or copyright over, the content and/or information sent or made available via the Directory or otherwise on the Site should be the property of the relevant Directory Member who makes it available or, in the case that it is not provided by a Directory Member, the person who provides the content or information. If the Directory Member or such other contributing person does not own the intellectual property rights or copyright, the Directory Member must obtain a licence or consent from the owner for such use in advance.
12.1.2 To facilitate Directory Members and Crafts Council staff with their workflow management processes, or other activity, Crafts Council may from time to time provide or authorise the use of certain third party software or applications to facilitate additional off Site access to the materials and content. For example, your images may be used through a trusted third party service provider, such as a printers. This will be strictly only in the context of providing promotion to you and the Directory. Use of such third party packages or systems is subject to the written approval of Crafts Council. A list of currently authorised third party packages or systems for use in facilitating off site access to Directory Member’s materials and content is available to Directory Members by contacting Crafts Council.
12.1.3 Please note that Crafts Council does not endorse and is not responsible for, or liable for any loss caused by, any such use of third party packages or systems. Any use is at your own risk and Crafts Council will not be liable for any loss of information, materials, data or otherwise that may occur due to the use of such third party packages or systems. Please contact us for further information or to discuss use of other packages or applications
12.2 As a Directory Member you agree to:
12.2.1 Grant to the Crafts Council and its subsidiaries or agents a perpetual, royalty-free, irrevocable, non-exclusive licence (together with the right to sub-licence) in respect of any materials or content submitted to the Directory or to Crafts Council, its subsidiaries and/or its appointed publicity contractor(s) and/or publisher for the purposes of promoting and publicising Crafts Council, the Directory, Directory Members or their materials and content, the artists whose work is exhibited, any events, fairs, or activities in which the Crafts Council and its subsidiaries are involved, both nationally and internationally and any other use as set out in these Directory Membership Terms and Conditions.
12.2.2 To grant permission to the Crafts Council and its subsidiaries or agents and/or its appointed publicity contractors and/or publishers to create its own images by taking photographs (in such form as the Crafts Council and its subsidiaries determines) of any exhibit or stand at any event for the same purposes as are mentioned in 12.1.1.
12.3 The above licences include: (i) permission to copy and hold any materials or content in any medium including but not limited to the use of the materials or content on the internet; (ii) the inclusion of the materials or content on the Directory or Crafts Council and its subsidiaries’ electronic database(s) which may be available to the public; and (iii) the right to alter and/or crop any images in order to incorporate them into the overall design of any publicity, or other, material.
13 Professional information you supply
13.1 You confirm that all information including images provided by you is truthful, honest and accurate.
13.2 Crafts Council reserves the right to edit the information you supply for visual impact, or to refuse or substitute any information tendered if Crafts Council reasonably considers it unsuitable or inconsistent with the general standard, appearance or policy of Crafts Council or the Directory.
13.3 All images need to be of your work and not someone else’s.
13.4 If other makers work is featured, please credit them in the image description.
14 Content consent and copyright
14.1 It is the responsibility of each Directory Member to ensure that they have full consent to the use of the copyright for all photography, voice-clips, video and any other content featured as part of their Directory Membership and will not infringe the intellectual property rights of any third party.
14.2 It is the responsibility of each Directory Member to ensure they have any necessary consents from any relevant third party to list details of productions/projects they have been involved in, or will be involved in. You should confirm that any such list does not disclose any confidential information provided by you without you obtaining the relevant consent.
15 Content - Uploading material
15.1 All images must be of work that is made by the named account holder of the Directory profile.
15.2 You must not upload material that is unlawful, defamatory, abusive, obscene, discriminatory or otherwise inappropriate to the Site or the Directory, or which you do not have the appropriate rights to use.
15.3 Photographers must be credited, according to copyright law. We reserve the right to refuse any photograph should you fail to provide suitable crediting information.
15.4 If images contain children under the age of 18 appropriate consent for website use is required from those with Parental Responsibility in line with the requirements of the Data Protection Act 2018.
15.5 Crafts Council reserves the right to suspend or withdraw Directory Membership and/or CC membership from Directory Members who violate the Terms and not to use, or make available, any material on the Site or Directory which it deems inappropriate, or to remove material from the Site or Directory which it considers to be in breach of these Terms.
15.6 In the case of you being involved in a dispute between the Crafts Council and a Directory Member, between any two or more Directory Members or between a Directory Member and any third party, Crafts Council reserves the right to remove your uploaded material or content from the online Directory and the Site, at its discretion. On resolution of any dispute, Crafts Council reserves the right to choose not to reinstate your uploaded material at its discretion.
16 Crafts Council promotion
16.1 When submitting a directory profile you are consenting to Public Directory profile to be published on Crafts Council website and it is your responsibility to ensure that you only publish information you want to be public.
16.2 We retain the right to use images on your Public Directory profile promotion for you and the directory, alongside Crafts Council publication and activity from time to time. If already in use, we retain the right to continue using selected images even if a directory profile has been cancelled.
17 Crafts Council Directory Member Selection Criteria
17.1 In order to maintain a required standard of work for industry and presentation on the Directory and the grant of a Directory Profile will be entirely at Crafts Council’s discretion. You can find the application criteria here.
18 Crafts Council Logo
18.1 Directory Members or their agent(s) may use the Directory logo on their own website provided that:
18.1.2 It is a single instance of the Crafts Council logo used as a link to www.craftscouncil.org.uk or www.craftscouncil.org.uk/directory
18.1.3 It is in the context of a factual reference to the role of Crafts Council and the logo does not imply Crafts Council's endorsement of any website or online service
18.1.4 You notify [email protected] including the full web address of the page(s) where our logo is used
18.1.5 Where requested by Crafts Council, you immediately remove such logo from your website.
19 Cancelling Public Directory Profile
19.1 By cancelling your CC membership you will no longer be listed on the directory. You may retain your CC membership and cancel your Public Directory Profile by contacting [email protected].
