Spirit of the Wood

Vernacular woodturning artist
East Riding of Yorkshire, England
Spirit of the Wood is the work of woodturning artist, Pete Thompson. The name derives from the belief that each piece of wood retains the spirit of the tree and the landscape from which it came and has a special, indefinable quality, giving each sculpture its own unique beauty. The form is guided as much by the wood itself as by the maker’s hand, resulting in an inseparable partnership between artist and material which reaffirms the physical and spiritual connection to the land and locality.

I use mainly locally sourced British woods that have been wind-felled, foraged or given by tree surgeons and would otherwise have been burned or chipped. The shaving generated are either composted or used as mulch. The finishes, fillers and polishes I use are homemade using natural ingredients such as oak galls, tree resins, beeswax and organic linseed oil.
