Having started my professional life in museums, I find myself drawn to creating work with a narrative, often based around objects, history, people and places.
I work mainly with textile, often old cloth or simple natural materials, and favour traditional hand techniques of appliqué, quilting and embroidery, used in contemporary ways.
I often work collaboratively with other artists and makers as well as installations in response to historical materials in archives and museums.
Focus:
Heritage and narratives, community and social justice
Ruth Singer has been commissioned by Gawthorpe Textiles Collection to create a digital archive and resources showing professional and hobby textile practice during lockdown 2020. Ruth will create a podcast and ebook of her research which will be launched in October.
Ruth Singer's innovative art and heritage project Criminal Quilts continues touring from 4th September 2020, firstly at Shire Hall Dorchester then Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre in 2021.
Two of my recent works have been purchased for museum collections.
'Memorial Sampler' has become part of the Gawthorpe Textiles Collection, Lancashire.
'Repeat Offender' is now in The Brampton Museum, Staffordshire.
